     RIP Dr. Carol Choye!

    Dr. Carol Choye

From San Francisco to Scotch Plains-Fanwood to Bank Street College to the National Superintendent Roundtable to the Horace Mann Society and beyond! You have left a legacy of equity in education. We will miss you my friend!

NJASA Past President Dr. Michael Kuchar, Chief Education Officer, The South Bergen Jointure Commission

Dr. Carol Choye, retired superintendent of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, passed away on April 16th after a long illness.

In 1998, she was named a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). "What I found when I got there (Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was a school district that serves as a microcosm of the nation," Dr. Choye said in a presentation that aired on C-SPAN. "We have rich and poor. We have different socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups. We have some very special ingredients that build upon that uniqueness."

"We have a community and parent group that supports high quality education. Frankly, they expect it," she said. "We make the words excellence and diversity come alive. We have a staff that is very proud of the work they do and are very insistent that our youngsters do the best that they can do."

Members of the school district were notified of Dr. Choye's death by a letter from current superintendent Dr. Joan Mast.

Due to the current health crisis, no funeral or gathering is permitted. However, later in September a Memorial to honor Dr. Choye will be held.
