    NJASA Names Dr. Michael LaSusa

Region I Regional Superintendent of the Year

Dr. Michael LaSusa is available to comment on Education-Related Issues.

November 6, 2018…… The New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA) selected Dr. Michael LaSusa, Chief Education Officer, School District of the Chathams, the 2019 Region I Regional Superintendent of the Year. He was introduced recently at the NJASA Executive Committee’s October meeting at the Annual Fall Workshop in Atlantic City. Later that day, Workshop acknowledged the 2019 Regional Superintendents of the Year at its general session. The Workshop is co-sponsored by NJASA, the New Jersey Association of School Business Officials (NJASBO), and the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA).

The two other chief education officers joining Dr. LaSusa, are: Region II winner - Dr. Michael Salvatore, Chief Education Officer, Long Branch Public Schools and Dr. Carol Birnbohm, Chief Education Officer, Lenape Regional High School District.

NJASA Executive Director Dr. Richard G. Bozza said, "Mike LaSusa is a dedicated, hard-working professional who continually strives to improve the quality of education for all students. He is a remarkable chief education officer with vision, imagination, and compassion for the students he serves."

As chief education officer of the School District of the Chathams – a comprehensive public school district serving a well-resourced community, located approximately 25 miles west of Manhattan, that has a well-earned reputation for excellence and has garnered recognition at the county, state and national level – Region I winner Dr. LaSusa has demonstrated his dynamic educational leadership ability in a manner that prioritizes balance and student well-being above all else.

The Region I winner was appointed Chief Education Officer of the School District of the Chathams in 2012. Previously, he served as the District’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, High School principal and Dean of Students.

An NJASA member since 2010, Dr. LaSusa serves as the Morris County Representative to the NJASA Legislative Committee and is the Vice President of the Board of Education for the Morris Union Jointure Commission. He served as President of the Morris County Association of School Administrators.

Dr. LaSusa is a recipient of the Angelo L. Tomaso Excellence in Dissertation Award. This award was named in 1993 following the sudden death of Dr. Angelo L. Tomaso, who was a member of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education Alumni Association Executive Committee and retired Superintendent of the Warren Township School District.

A Chester resident, he earned his Doctorate in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education from Rutgers University. He received his master’s degree from St Joseph’s University in Secondary Education and his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College.

The next step in the process for the three regional winners will be the selection of a New Jersey candidate to participate in the AASA National Superintendent of the Year Award. A committee of NJASA Past Presidents and former Regional Superintendents of the Year will select the 2019 New Jersey Superintendent of the Year. The program, now in its 32nd year and sponsored by First Student, VALIC, and AASA, pays tribute to the talent and vision of the men and women who lead our nation’s public schools.

AASA will announce the National Superintendent of the Year at its Annual Conference on Education in February 2019.
