School Leaders learn to move from print-based classroom to digital learning environment at 18thannual
TECHSPO conference to keep up with how students learn, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2013

    • Dr. Richard Bozza, executive director of the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA), is available to discuss the transformation from print-based to digital learning environments.

TRENTON, N.J.January 22, 2013— Schools without computers, iPads and Internet access are the exception rather than the rule these days, but most classrooms continue to be print-based, according to the NJASA. Taking that next step, to fully transition to a digital and blended learning environment, is the focus of this year’s TECHSPO, a statewide technology conference by educators for educators.

The18thannual TECHSPO conference will be held on Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2013. Sponsored by the NJASA, the conference is the largest of its kind in the state, and will be attended by chief education officers, school board members, school leaders, curriculum directors and teachers. TECHSPO is being held at Bally’s Atlantic City.

“Schools are at a pivotal turning point with technology,” said Richard Bozza, Ed.D., executive director, NJASA. “We are moving beyond ‘classrooms with computers’ to environments where technology is an integral part of creative thinking and problem-solving. With technology, students can learn at their own pace, guided by teachers who no longer become the sole content providers. In this way, students become much more engaged in the learning process.”

A Conference By Educators for Educators

TECHSPO will showcase digital technologies, as well as introduce ways to use them in meaningful instruction. The conference will feature keynote addresses by two visionaries in the educational technology field:

    • A Visual Approach to Math: Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer and Senior Scientist at the MIND Research Institute, Dr. Matthew Peterson once struggled with traditional language-based instruction due to dyslexia. As a result, he created a Spatial Temporal Math software program that teaches sophisticated math concepts visually rather than verbally.
    •
    • The Digital Generation Comes of Age: For the last 20 years, computers and technology have been part of the everyday curriculum for a generation or two of digitally privileged kids – and, as they become the majority, it's show time. As computer-literate children become America's new leaders, visionaries, and designers, how will their digital upbringing affect society and culture? New York Times technology columnist David Pogue takes a thoughtful, funny look at how the tidal wave will hit as the digital generation enters prime time – what we'll gain, what we'll lose, and what beliefs and approaches will shift into something we've never seen before.
    •

In addition, TECHSPO will provide two days of group instructional sessions. A full schedule is available at https://www.njasa.net/Page/929. Following are highlights:

Education Brief Videos Explain Budget Considerations
What schools can offer to students is directly affected by budget. Due to the complexity of the school budget cuts and the effects that will be felt in schools across the state, the NJASA has released a series of videos to help parents and taxpayers better understand the issues, and the potential aftermath of the events and changes. Each video can be accessed on a special NJASA YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/TheNJASA or by clicking on the YouTube icon on the NJASA website,www.njasa.net.
